Do I Have a Laser or Inkjet Printer?

It may seem like an obvious question, but knowing what kind of printer you have is important when deciding what labels to use. Without getting into the particulars of which kind of printer is best for what label, which we have outlined in this article, here are a few quick tricks to figuring out what kind of printer you may have:

  1. Look at the name of your printer. Most printers have their make and model advertised on a label somewhere on their surface. Many printers have the words “inkjet” or “laser” built into the name.
  2. If your printer name does not make it clear what kind of printer you have, use an online search engine, such as Google, to look the name up. Finding further information on your particular model will likely let you know what kind of printer it is.
  3. You can also remove the cartridges in your printer. Bigger print cartridges usually belong to laser printers. Smaller, less heavy cartridges are mostly from inkjet printers. The different colors of toners in laser printers have separate cartridges with separate spaces in the printer. Inkjet printers usually have a shared cartridge and a shared space in the printer.
  4. If no above steps help, call the printer manufacturer. They should be able to help with any questions you have about your printer.
